"Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food”, was coined by Hippocrates, almost 2500 years ago and remains one of the greatest prescriptions to have stood the test of time. Food-as-medicine continues to gain momentum over the years, as scientific research mounts validating the impact food has on health and the ability to prevent and reverse certain chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease. This spotlight on food-as-medicine continues to shine in the light of the emerging paradigm shift from sick care to health care. Perhaps, there has never been a more poignant time than now for the dire need of food-as-medicine and the innovative technology of making dietary changes easy.We are in a time when the epidemic of lifestyle-related disease is escalating, alongside the acute pandemic spread of Covid-19 afflicting those with chronic disease most severely. Currently, 6 of 10 of Americans have at least one chronic condition and 4 out of 10 have two or more. These chronic lifestyle-related conditions are the leading drivers of the nations $3.5 trillion and rising annual health care costs. These statistics could be significantly reduced by making simple changes in the diet and lifestyle. More importantly, lives could be saved, and the health and well-being of the nation improved by simply making healthier food and lifestyle choices. This is evidenced by vast amount of research showing plant-based diets, especially when rich in high quality plant foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts, to be associated with lower risk for the leading chronic diseases such as cardiovascular and kidney disease, diabetes, certain cancers such as colon cancer and other inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis. This study published 2019 in the Journal of American Heart Association, is just one example revealing how a healthy, whole food, plant-based approach lowers the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality along with a decrease in all disease related deaths in a general population.
As the new Director of Clinical Nutrition for Lighter, I am thrilled to join this innovative company and team of brilliant engineers, designers, nutritionists, coaches, business executives and game changers who are leading the food-as-medicine movement with the paradigm shift in healthcare.
I have been working in healthcare for over 25 years and have experienced both personally and professionally the impact of food-as-medicine and lifestyle change. I had the great opportunity to work with top leaders in healthcare, lifestyle medicine and behaviors change such as Dr. Dean Ornish, who paved the path in lifestyle medicine showing the reversal of heart disease, early stage prostate cancer and currently the potential of reversing early stage Alzheimer’s disease. I have worked and trained with others such as Jon Kabat Zin with MBSR (Mindful-based Stress Reduction), Laurel Mellin founder of EBT (Emotional Brain Training) which is based on the neuroscience of rewiring your brain for resilience, and many more inspiring leaders and trail-blazers in lifestyle medicine.
